Setting up your receipt printer
Last updated: April 24, 2023
If you’re just getting started with receipts, follow the steps below to make sure your printer is set up properly. Once you’re ready, see Printing receipts for more information on printing receipts from FareHarbor.
Getting started
Make sure you have receipt printing enabled on your Dashboard. You can check to see if you have this enabled by opening a booking, clicking Print, and looking for the Receipt Format option. If you do not see this option, contact FareHarbor Support to turn on receipt printing.
You’ll also need a receipt printer. Any receipt printer should work with FareHarbor, but we’ve tested and can recommend the Star TSP100 USB Printer, which connects to your computer via USB. Read more about FareHarbor’s recommended printers.
Setting up your receipt printer
Printers of this kind can require detailed setup to ensure accurate printing and cutting. Follow the below steps to make sure your tickets print properly.
Note: It’s important to install your printer’s driver software, even if your computer prints without it. The driver software gives your computer access to printer-specific functions, like the ability to cut receipts.
To set up your receipt printer on a Mac:
- Install the driver software that came with your receipt printer
- Connect the printer to your computer (depending on the printer, you will use either a USB or ethernet cable)
- Turn on the printer
- Click the Apple menu at the top left of your computer screen, then navigate to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
- Select the + button in the bottom left of the Printers section
Select the name of your receipt printer. In this section, make sure you also choose which printer driver software to use:
- In the dropdown next to Use:, make sure that the software name matches the name of the driver software you installed earlier
- If you don’t see your printer in the list, make sure it is plugged into your computer and turned on.
Click Add
Once you’ve added the printer, it will appear in the Printers & Scanners list.
To set up your printer on a PC:
- Install the driver software that came with your receipt printer
- Connect the printer to your computer (depending on the printer, you will use either a USB or ethernet cable)
- Turn on the printer
- Your computer should automatically detect the new device and start installing
- Once the install has completed, navigate to Control Panel > View devices and printers and confirm that the printer is listed under Printers
If your printer does not appear in the Devices and Printers section, you may need to restart your computer. For more troubleshooting, see below.
Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t have my printer driver software – how can I install it?
If you do not have the driver software for your printer, you can download it from the printer’s website and install it onto your computer. For example, here is where you can download driver software for Star receipt printers.
Internal-only content. Don't copy and paste to anyone.
Note: As of February 2018, FareHarbor supports printing receipts on Boca tickets, so most companies should not have to do this.
Follow the steps below to set up multiple printers with your computer and print from FareHarbor using saved settings. This setups allows clients to quickly switch between receipt printers and ticket printers, which comes in handy, for example, if they need to print both a receipt and a ticket for each customer and don’t want to adjust your settings each time you switch between printers.
Summary: Set up one printer as the computer’s default printer, while using the second printer as the last used printer in your browser. When printing from a booking, open your computer’s print settings to use the first printer, then use your browser’s print settings to print from the second.
Installing your printers
First, make sure both printers are installed. If using a Boca or Star printer, you can read more about these processes on the following pages:
Once the printers are installed, follow the steps below depending on what type of computer you’re using.
Configuring computer settings
Windows
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers
- Right-click the first printer to go to its Printer Properties, then go to Device Settings
- Under Paper Type, select the appropriate option for your printer (for example, use Receipt for receipt printers, Concert Ticket for Boca printers, etc.)
- Click Apply to save your settings
- Repeat steps 2-4 for your second printer
- Now set a default printer by right-clicking on the desired printer and selecting Set default
On computers with Windows 10, you’ll also need to go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and make sure that the toggle under “Let Windows manage my default printer” is off. Otherwise, the computer will automatically print from the last used printer.
Mac
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
- Under Default printer, select the printer you want to be your default
- Under Default paper size, select the appropriate option for your default printer (Note: in some cases, you may need to create a new paper size manually. See Creating custom paper sizes below.)
These settings will automatically be saved. You’ll set up the second printer’s settings in the next step.

Creating custom paper sizes on Mac
- Navigate to any page in your browser, then select File > Print
- From the print preview, click “Print using system dialog” or type Option + Command + P
- Find the Paper Size dropdown and select Manage Custom Sizes
- You should now see a window like the one below. Click the “+” button to add a custom paper size.
- Double click on the new paper size to change its name
- Enter the Paper Size and Margin settings (for receipts and tickets, you’ll usually want to set margins to 0)
- Click OK

Configuring browser settings
Configure the settings for your non-default printer directly from your browser.
We recommend using Google Chrome as your browser, especially when using a Boca ticket printer. This is because Chrome includes the option to set custom margins for your tickets, giving you a bit more flexibility.
- Go to your FareHarbor Dashboard and open a booking
- Click the Print receipt option at the bottom of the Booking Actions
- Select a print option (for example, Tickets or Booking receipt)
- From the print preview, ensure that the correct printer is selected (this should be your second printer, not the printer you set up in the previous section)
- Click More settings to configure the Paper Size and Margins
- Click Print
Note: If the printed result doesn’t look quite right, you may need to experiment with your settings and try again until you get your desired outcome. If using a Star or Boca printer, see additional notes below.
Additional notes for Star receipt printers
We recommend the following settings for receipts:
- Layout: Portrait
- Paper size: 72mm x 200mm
- Margins: None
See our Receipt printing page for more information on using Star printers.
Additional notes for Boca ticket printers
- If using 5.5x2in tickets, see our recommended print settings.
- If using a different sized ticket, or if the above doesn’t work, use ticket layouts in FareHarbor to customize your ticket settings.
- If you’re having trouble getting your tickets to print correctly, see our Troubleshooting section. Sometimes it’s just a matter of experimenting with different settings until it looks right.
Once you’re happy with your settings, simply leave them as is. Your browser will remember them the next time you use that printer.
Printing from FareHarbor
Once you’ve configured both your computer and browser print settings, you can follow the below steps to use both printers in your day-to-day operations.
Using your computer’s default printer
- Go to your FareHarbor Dashboard and create or open a booking
- From the booking, click Print receipt or type Shift + P
- Select the appropriate print option for your default printer
Now open your computer’s print settings:
- Windows: Hit the (esc) button or click Cancel, then type Ctrl + Shift + P
- Mac: From the browser’s print window, click Print using system dialog or type Option + Command + P
You should now see a different print window, with your default printer settings saved. From here, click Print.
Using your browser’s last used printer
Once you’ve successfully printed from the first printer, you can use your second printer by going back to the booking and choosing another print option.
- From the booking, click the Back button (this will take you back to the booking’s print options)
- Select the appropriate print option for your second printer
- From the browser’s print preview, verify that the printer is correct
- Click Print
