Adding valid or blackout dates
Last updated: December 31, 2019
When adding promotional codes to a campaign, you can set valid dates and/or blackout dates to specify which days your codes can and cannot be used.
Watch a short video or click into the sections below for more details on how to add valid and blackout dates.
Options
When creating valid and blackout dates, you can determine how they should be applied using the following options:
Availabilities on: Make codes valid or invalid for availabilities starting in a specific date range (for example, a promo code valid for activities taking place on the 4th of July). You may also optionally choose specific days of the week that codes are valid or invalid.
Booking on: Make codes valid or invalid for bookings created in a specific date range (for example, offer a special discount to all customers who make a booking in September, regardless of when the activity they’re booking takes place). You may also optionally choose specific days of the week that codes are valid or invalid.
Days before midnight on day of availability: Make codes valid or invalid for a specific number of days before the availability takes place. Example: Give customers an “early bird” code that they can use to book tours that are at least 21 days in the future. Add blackout dates to prevent them from booking a tour that starts within 21 days.
Days after code generation (booking creation date): Make codes valid or invalid for bookings created a certain number of days after the code generation date. Example: A “membership” code valid for 365 days can be used for any bookings made in the next year.
Days after code generation (availability start date): Make codes valid or invalid for availabilities that start a certain number of days after the code generation date. Example: Give customers a code that they can use to book any activity that starts in the next week.
Adding valid and blackout dates
- Go to Settings and select Campaigns from the sidebar.
- Click Edit next to the campaign you want to update.
- Go to the Settings tab.
Click Add valid or blackout dates and fill out the following:
- First, choose whether to create valid dates or blackout dates.
- Next, determine whether rules should be based on availabilities, booking creation, or code creation (read more about these options).
- Set the dates or number of days that these rules will be in effect.
- If applicable, select the days of the week that these rules will be in effect.
Click the Create button.

Once you create your valid or blackout dates, they will appear on the Campaign Settings tab.
Using multiple valid and blackout dates
You can create as many valid or blackout dates as you need. A simple example would be if you needed to specify multiple blackout dates (such as January 1, July 4, and December 25) instead of a date range.
You can also set multiple conditions for your promo codes by creating several valid or blackout dates with different rules.
For example, if you wanted to promote a code that can only be used on December 26, for availabilities taking place between December 28-30, you would add two valid dates: one for bookings on December 26, and one for availabilities on December 28-30.

If all days are selected we don’t display anything; the days are “unrestricted”, like they are for the other types of rules for which the days of the week are not relevant.
Things to keep in mind
Keep in mind:
- These rules apply to online customers only. Logged-in Dashboard users with booking permissions can override valid and blackout dates, if needed.
- When no valid or blackout dates are added, codes will always be valid.
- When only blackout dates are added, codes will be treated as valid except for the blackout dates specified.
- If there are overlapping valid and blackout dates, the blackout dates will override the valid dates.

For “Days before” and “Days after” options:
You can use decimal places for more granularity. For example, to make a code invalid 6 hours before midnight on the day of the availability, choose Days before midnight on day of availability and enter 0.25 days. Up to two decimal places are allowed.
Entering 0 days essentially makes the rule untrue. Examples:
“Valid for 0 days before midnight on day of availability” means the code will not be valid before midnight on the day of the availability. It will only be valid after midnight on the day of the availability.
“Valid for 0 days after code generation” means the code will never be valid.
“Invalid for 0 days after code generation” means the code will never be invalid (in other words, it will always be valid).
