How to set up lessons
Last updated: June 19, 2020
Note: Check out this demo Dashboard and onboarding doc to see the best practice setup in action.
Lessons can be built in FareHarbor a few different ways. These options should be discussed with the client to find the best fit for them. Below are the optimal setups for a group lesson, semi-private lesson, and private lesson. For transparency, here is how this help page defines the different types of lessons we are referring to:
- Group Lesson: Public offering for a group of people.
- Semi-Private Lesson: Private lesson that includes 2-3 participants. The best practice below demonstrates a semi-private lesson for 2 people.
- Private Lesson: Private lesson for one participant.
Benefits
- Companies can offer different variations of lessons.
- Resources do not need to use decimals because the max use is the amount of people instructors can accommodate.
- This gives the client the ability to attribute resources to individual people if they need or the group as a whole.
Please also check the FareHarbor Internal Changelog for updated information about optimal setups. For more information about the development and communication of optimal setups related to any features, please see the Best Practice Communications Cheatsheet.
Group Lesson
- Create customer types. Customer types should represent the person receiving the lessons (for example, Participant, Surfer, etc).
Create instructor/guide resource. Max use of the resource should be the amount of students each instructor can accomodate for and should be restricted to availability.

Create Group Lesson item with:
Customer types

- Custom fields if needed
- Resource requirement group. Add one requirement with each customer type using 1 of your instructor/guide resource.
- Create your availabilities for your Group Lesson. Capacity is not needed on the calendar because the resources you have created are going to restrict the capacity to the max number of instructor/guide uses.
Semi-Private Lesson Option One: Individual Customer Type
- Create customer types. Customer types should represent the person receiving the lessons (for example, Participant, Surfer, etc).
- Create instructor/guide resource. Max use of the resource should be the amount of students each instructor can accomodate for and should be restricted to availability.
Create Semi-Private item with:
Booking minimum of 2 for no bookings and 1+ bookings in Bookability. This will require the customers to select two of the customer types, which is needed for the semi-private item.

Add your customer type and custom fields if needed. Customer type note should emphasize that two customer types are required for this offering.

Add your resource requirement group. Because the Semi-Private customer type must have a minimum and maximum of 2 people, each customer type should use half the max uses of the resource. For example, if the max use of the instructor resource is 4, each Surfer customer type should use 2 of the resource. That way, when two surfers are selected, all 4 of the instructor max uses are used and there can be no other bookings in that availability.

- Create your availabilities for your Semi-Private Lesson. Capacity is not needed on the calendar because the resources you have created are going to restrict the capacity to the max number of instructor/guide uses.
Semi-Private Lesson Option Two: Group Customer Type
- Create customer type. Customer type should represent the group, such as “Semi-Private Lesson”.
- Create instructor/guide resource. Max use of the resource should be the amount of students each instructor can accomodate for and should be restricted to availability.
Create Semi-Private item with:
Add your customer type and custom fields if needed. Customer type note should emphasize that both participants are included in the price.

Add your resource requirement group. Because the Semi-Private customer type is a private, group customer type, that CT should use all the max uses of the resource.

- Create your availabilities for your Semi-Private Lesson. Capacity is not needed on the calendar because resources will restrict the capacity. Customers should only be able to book one customer type at a time.
Private Lesson
- Create customer types. Customer types should represent the person receiving the lessons (for example, Participant, Surfer, etc).
- Create instructor/guide resource. Max use of the resource should be the amount of students each instructor can accomodate for and should be restricted to availability.
Create Private item with:
Add your customer type and custom fields if needed. Customer type note should emphasize that it is a private lesson for one.

Add your resource requirement group. Because the Private customer type is for one individual, that CT should use all the max uses of the resource.

- Create your availabilities for your Private Lesson. Capacity is not needed on the calendar because resources will restrict the capacity. Customers should only be able to book one customer type at a time.
