Permalinks

This page explains details about permalinks and where to edit them in WordPress.
What is a Permalink?
A permalink is the section of text after the URL that defines the page. It looks like: www.domain.com/permalink/
Anytime a permalink is changed, you must add a redirect from the old link to the new link. If this step is missed, SEO rankings could be affected.
Important Context for Permalinks
- Repeating keywords in permalinks does not help SEO. Please do not change or edit the permalinks unless it’s completely necessary. When your site is built, FareHarbor sites teams add variety in permalink keywords so your site ranks for different words or shorten the permalink to avoid repetition and make it more readable.
- When your FareHarbor site is built, we do our best to match the new permalinks to your previous site’s permalinks, if you had one. This helps cut down on the amount of redirects needed.
- Parent pages can crossover from page types. This means that a Page can act as a parent page for an Activity and an Activity can act as a parent page for a Page. This is what the “Post Parent Type” field determines.
How to Edit Permalinks
Permalinks can be edited in 2 places.
- All pages/activities view – click on “Quick Edit” on the page you want to edit on the all pages view. The permalink is determined by the “Slug” section.
2. Under the title – on the backend of individual pages and activity pages, the permalink is located immediately under the title.
Click “Edit” next to the permalink to change it.

Parent Pages
A parent page is a page that has one or more child pages nested under it. In terms of permalinks, the child page is nested under the parent page permalink. Looks like www.domain.com/parent-page/child-page/
Parent pages should be used as category pages for activities and similar pages on a website.
How to Nest Pages
Pages can be nested in 2 places.
- All pages/activities view – click on “Quick Edit”. Select the parent page type in the drop down labeled “Post Parent Type” then select the parent page title in the drop down labeled “Parent.”

- Right sidebar – in the backend of the page you want to nest, select the parent page type in the section labeled “Post Parent Type” in the right sidebar. Above that section, there is another section labeled “Page Attributes” where you can select the parent page title from the drop down.

Internal-only content. Don't copy and paste to anyone.
Permalinks and Keywords
Permalinks are an ideal place for adding keywords during a website build. In addition to the page title, h1, and meta description, you should have keywords in your permalink, which could include locations or activity types. For example, if a company on Maui had a page labeled “Tours”, it might be a good idea to have the permalink be something like: /maui-tours/
Permalinks should be all lowercase. They should not contain “and,” “a,” conjunctions, or other articles if it can be helped. Each word in permalinks should be separated by dashes.
For example, a page titled “The Best Tours on Oahu and Maui” would have an optimized permalink that looks like “best-tours-oahu-maui” so the full URL would look like: www.domain.com/best-tours-oahu-maui/
