Buoy Feature Kit
Last updated: July 10, 2025
This page is dedicated to ensuring you have a full grasp and understanding of the Buoy Integration. This includes any and all pertinent materials to allow you to sell, setup, maintain, talk about, and use this feature. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Product Manager, Robyn Silverstone and/or the Product Enablement Manager, Zack Feld.
Feature Overview and Value Proposition
Buoy is an insurance liability system for boat rental operators. Buoy offers usage-based coverage for boat rental companies and their renters. Renters pay for insurance on a per-trip basis. This integration allows end-customers to sign their liability waiver for a specific vessel when they receive their confirmation email.
We have already been partnering with Buoy, with a limited integration which included a link to purchase insurance but the end-customer needed to provide the boating registration number which was causing confusion. With the enhanced integration, this is no longer necessary.
This brings a lot of value to our clients because it enables customers to sign their water vessel-specific insurance as soon as they have booked. Allows clients to stay compliant, save time at check-in, and offer a smoother rental experience.
Value for Clients:
- Seamless Digital Experience: Customers can handle insurance directly from their confirmation email, reducing friction.
- Vessel-Specific Compliance: Insurance is tied to the boat or resource being rented, ensuring legal accuracy and easier claims handling.
- Built-in Insurance Offering: Operators can automatically offer the required insurance through Buoy, helping customers meet local regulations (e.g. Florida).
- Faster Check-In: Pre-arrival completion of paperwork speeds up on-site process, freeing up staff and improving customer satisfaction.
- Reduce Liability Risk: Ensure proper documentation and coverage are in place before departure, protecting the business and customer.
Target Audience
- Tiers: Any
- Regions: United States
- Clients who rent boats
- Specifically clients in Florida, where there is a law FL Boating Safety Act of 2022 (SB606). This law requires boat renters to purchase insurance for renting a boat or provide their own.
- Clients in other regions of the US that may also use this as a way to protect their boats.
Monetization
The integration itself is free, but Buoy offers their own pricing. Clients can reach out to Buoy to learn more about their costs. As of May 2025, the end-customer pays for the insurance and Buoy is free for the operator.
Objection and Competitor Handling
Not available.
Mapping Buoy to the FareHarbor Dashboard
In order for a specific vessel to be attached to a booking, the booking will need 2 things: 1) a resource and 2) the registration number of the vessel attached to said resource. The registration number of the vessel is something the client will have and will either need to provide it to us to set up or they can enter themselves in the settings of a resource. There is nothing else that needs to happen in order for this integration to appear in the confirmation email when a booking is made using a resource with a vessel attached to it.
Client Facing Resources and Documentation
Below are additional resources to share with clients:
Internal Training Resources and Technical Documentation
Internal Training:
To demo this integration:
- Go to a demo.fareharbor.com Dashboard (preferably the one you typically work in)
- Go to your resources and create a resource (preferably name it “Pontoon” or “Boat” or something along those lines)
- Add this registration number: FL4444OO
- Max uses can be set to whatever you’d like
- Create an item called “Boat Rental” that has a customer type for a boat (in options & prices)
- Add this resource to the resource requirement group in options & prices
- Create availabilities
- Then you can make a booking a view the integration via the confirmation email/page and click the link to go through the process a customer would go through

Best Practices
- Resource names: Ensure resource names with registration numbers are appropriate, clear, and easily understood.
- The resource name will be shown in the confirmation email (end-customer facing)
- Registration Number: This field should only be used if the resource has an associated vessel/registration number. Otherwise, this should be blank.
- Clients shouldn’t enter any other number as it will appear on the booking confirmation email and may be mistakenly associated with Buoy.
- Integration with Buoy isn’t a good fit for items that have group resources (e.g. – a resource called “Jet skis” with max use of 10 – meaning the client has 10 jet skis to use). Since registration numbers are assigned to each vessel – this setup would need to be redone for the integration to work as expected.
Limitations
- Dashboard users can’t see in FareHarbor if the customer has purchased the liability insurance or not.
What we are not building out with this integration
- Integrating an embed in the booking flow from a 3rd party provider.
- The option to have the payment for the insurance done through FareHarbor or any type of monetization for insurance in FareHarbor.
- An invoicing solution so that we can reconcile the money between the operator and the 3rd party solution provider (e.g. the partnership between the 3rd party solution Buoy and operator will be done offline)
- A way to report on the insurance policies purchased so far. This can be captured in the 3rd party solution dashboard.
- Option to purchase trip cancellation for weather cancellation (e.g. integration with Sensible weather).
- Communication between customer & insurer regarding the policy (will be done by the insurer)
