What is Airbnb?
Airbnb Experiences is a global online travel agent (OTA) based in the United States. It operates an online marketplace and booking engine for accommodations, tours, and activities. Use the Airbnb API integration to manage Airbnb Experiences listings and bookings via the Dashboard.
How does the Airbnb API work?
This partnership is designed to save clients time by consolidating systems and allowing Airbnb to pull live availability from FareHarbor. As a result, clients do not need to manage their availabilities manually in Airbnb, and bookings made on Airbnb Experiences will flow into the client’s FareHarbor dashboard automatically.
What do clients need to do before connecting to the API?
In order to start the integration process, the client will need to have an account on Airbnb with active products built out in their Airbnb account.
Fareharbor clients can sign-up for a Airbnb supplier account via this link. In order to connect their Airbnb account to FareHarbor they will need to click the “Connect now” button in the dashboard Integrations –> OTA Integrations tab. This will automate a ticket to the Connectivity queue with their Host ID.
How does the connection process work?
Pre Go-Live
AE will gather any commission information and the affiliate will be built out during the onboarding process by the build team. The Connectivity Team is notified of any new dashboards with the Airbnb affiliate when they go live. The Connectivity New Connections team adds the shortname to Airtable with a proper SLA based on client tier. Once the record is claimed by an available agent, the Connectivity team will reach out to the client requesting them to follow the ‘connect now’ steps. This will trigger an automatic email from Airbnb that will allow us to access their Airbnb account and start the connection process.
NOTE: In order for this to work, the Dashboard builder must ensure the Airbnb API affiliate is added to the Affiliates section of the dashboard before the client is set to “Active” in Close.
Post Go-Live
If there is a client that’s interested and previously opted out they should resubmit a new Mapping Request Form using the “New Connection” request option to notify the Connectivity Team.
The Connectivity Team will follow the appropriate process as described above. If there are eligibility issues we will work with clients to specify the missing criteria and provide Booking.com’s content requirements. Adjusting content is a self service action unless the client needs further assistance navigating the dashboard.
For Current Airbnb Clients:
Log into your FareHarbor Dashboard as a user with Director-level permissions and make sure you are logged into your Airbnb host account that you want associated with your Dashboard.
For Airbnb, please ensure you are logged into your main host account, not a Co-Host account or guest account, before proceeding with authorization.
On your FareHarbor Dashboard follow these steps Settings → Integrations → OTA Connections → Airbnb “Connect now” button.
This triggers an authorization process where you will be redirected to Airbnb to allow FareHarbor to connect to your Airbnb account. You will then be returned to the OTA tab in Integrations and the “Connect now” button will show “Connected.”
Note: Products on Airbnb must have publishing enabled
For Clients Not Currently Working with Airbnb:
Instruct client to follow this link to complete the online sign-up application.
Once client becomes an approved supplier, they can use the Airbnb partner portal to build out the products they would like to offer on Airbnb Experiences.
When the products are approved and enabled for publishing, client will need to follow the steps below to notify the FareHarbor Connectivity Team:
Note: The Connectivity Team cannot promise when we will be able to complete the mappings as this depends on many factors, such as product setup complexity. We will reach out to the client if we have any questions about the setup.
How to tell if a client is live on the Airbnb API
To see if a client is live on the API, search in Close for the Connectivity – Live custom field in the Dashboards custom object. If the company is live on the API, Airbnb will be listed.
What does an Airbnb booking look like in FareHarbor?
Booking overview:
Custom fields and custom field pricing are not connected at this time.
Can changes to FareHarbor dashboards break API connections?
Yes! If changes are made to a FareHarbor item that is connected to Airbnb, the Connectivity team needs to manually update the corresponding mapping files to keep the connection intact. What kinds of changes should be submitted to the Connectivity team?
- Removing customer types from availabilities and adding new ones
- Deleting/archiving a connected item and replacing it with a new one
- Removing or changing API-specific resource setups and/or customer types
- Changing start times to anything besides those on the hour, half hour or quarter hour
- Note that call-to-book, cancelled, or closed and hidden availabilities are read as unavailable through the API.
Always check admin notes for Connectivity-specific notes! If you’re ever unsure if a change has broken a connection, please submit a mapping request to the Connectivity team so we can check (see below)!
How do I contact the Connectivity team to connect new items, troubleshoot, or make updates?
Please submit an API Mapping Request Form so we can follow up with the client. Please include as much detail as possible!
Airbnb FAQ
Does pricing pull from FareHarbor?
No, Airbnb does not pull from FareHarbor. Airbnb does have the ability to pass the retail rate back to FareHarbor when a reservation is made, helping keep our booking totals accurate.
Does Airbnb pull duration from FareHarbor?
No, this has to be set on the Airbnb product directly.
How does Airbnb pull availability, start times, and capacity?
Calendar sync pulls the next 370 days of availability instantly upon connection. Availability is also routinely refreshed at 8pm MST for the next 90 days out. As well as weekly on Thursdays at 10pm MST for dates 90-370 days out.
Airbnb is only able to pull start times at 15 minute increments. Other start times are not recognized at time of sync (example: 6:05am is not recognized).
Airbnb puts a max capacity of 16 on any public tours. They count Airbnb specific bookings against this total, as well as honoring the FareHarbor dashboard capacity.
How do private tours work on Airbnb?
Unless they are built as a completely separate product, private tours are considered an “add-on” to the original tour pricing. This means that in FareHarbor the private tours must have the same start times and calendar schedule as public tours in order to connect.
Can a client have a different currency on Airbnb than on FareHarbor?
No. The currency in Airbnb is determined by the client’s location. This must match the currency in the FareHarbor dashboard. Clients are not able to adjust their currency in Airbnb manually at this time.
Does Airbnb support multi-language tours?
No, because Airbnb does not currently offer “product options” and the language selected on their checkout process is not sent through to FareHarbor, we have no way to determine language selection. For now clients must select one language on Airbnb so they are confident about what was booked when looking at their FareHarbor dashboard.
Can clients contact Airbnb customers through the FareHarbor booking overlay?
No, Airbnb does not send through a customer email address or phone number. All customer communications need to take place through the client’s Airbnb account.
What FareHarbor emails are and are not sent out on Airbnb bookings?
FareHarbor reminder/confirmation emails are enabled by default when setting up new connections. This can be enabled or disabled at a later date under the dashboard affiliate settings, if requested.
Follow-up emails are sent automatically on every API booking.
Can a supplier have multiple FareHarbor dashboards connected to one Airbnb account? What about multiple Airbnb accounts to one dashboard?
Yes, we can connect multiple FareHarbor dashboards to one Airbnb account as long as the dashboard currency and timezones match the corresponding Airbnb item location (which dictates it’s currency and timezone).
No, we cannot connect multiple Airbnb accounts to the same FareHarbor dashboard.
How do cancellations and refunds for Airbnb bookings work?
Cancellations follow the policy set in Airbnb and flow through the API to mark a booking as cancelled in FareHarbor. Airbnb will refund the booking (or not) according to their policy. The refund must be done through Airbnb since the payment was collected there.
Clients may subscribe to cancellation notification emails in FareHarbor, which will notify them when Airbnb cancels a booking. (To do this: go to Client FH Dashboard > “Users and Permissions” > “Edit” > “Account” > “Email Notifications”)
How do amendments (rebookings) work?
Amendments to Airbnb bookings flow through the API and the original booking will automatically update in FareHarbor.
Can a client limit availability on Airbnb?
Clients can choose to only sell certain items, days/dates, or times using affiliate rules to control availability for any affiliates.
Can Airbnb book into unlisted items in FareHarbor?
Yes.
Can Airbnb book into unlisted availabilities in FareHarbor?
Yes.
Can Airbnb pull FareHarbor’s QR codes?
No, ticket scanning in FareHarbor is not currently available for Airbnb bookings.
How much does a client have to pay for this integration?
Airbnb takes a commission percentage on every booking made through their platform. This is negotiated between Airbnb and the client but is generally 20%. FareHarbor collects an API off eligible API bookings as outlined here.
