How to enable and disable Smartwaiver
Last updated: November 1, 2024
If the client has a question about the connection that can best be answered by the partner, either encourage them to contact their account representative or their support team at support@smartwaiver.com.
Watch the video or read through the steps below to enable Smartwaiver for a company.
Note: If a company has more than one Dashboard and wants to use Smartwaiver, please refer to this step to learn how to set this up.
Enabling Smartwaiver
1. Get company set up on Smartwaiver
If the company is not yet set up with Smartwaiver, they’ll need to create an account and upload their waiver. Here is some sample messaging:
Please send over your login information once your Smartwaiver account is set up, and we’ll take care of linking your FareHarbor and Smartwaiver accounts. We’ll also set up your confirmation emails on FareHarbor to include “Sign Waiver” buttons for your customers. Once the integration is complete, signed waivers will be included in your manifest, allowing you to view them directly from your FareHarbor Dashboard.

2. Enable Smartwaiver in FareHarbor
Once the company sends you their Smartwaiver account information, follow the below steps to enable Smartwaiver in FareHarbor.
Note: This process changed on May 30, 2018 to reflect Smartwaiver’s latest API updates. Companies that previously had a V3 API key will be given a new V4 API key (no action is needed on our end). Moving forward, all accounts should be set up using the V4 API key.
- Log into the Smartwaiver account and verify the client has uploaded their waiver under Create/Edit Waivers.
Enable the Smartwaiver feature flag.
- Press
Shift + ,or navigate to Settings > Advanced company settings (gear icon in the upper right). - Navigate to the Bookings section, or use the search bar, to locate and check the Smartwaiver option.
- Save changes to finalize the update.
- Press
Add the API Key:
- Go to https://app.smartwaiver.com/user/api.
- Enter a name for your API key (for example: “FareHarbor”) under Create an API Key, and click Create.
- Copy the created key (if there are two API keys, copy the one labeled API Key for V4).
- Navigate back to FareHarbor and paste the string under API Key.
Add the Webhook key:
- Go to smartwaiver.com/m/rest/?webhooks.
- Click Enable Account Level Webhooks.
- Choose the Web Endpoint radio button as seen in the screenshot below.
- Copy the Webhook URL from FareHarbor and paste it into Smartwaiver.
- Select the Do not wait for email validation… option, then click Save.
- Click Show Webhook Private Key.
- Copy the generated Webhook key from Smartwaiver and paste it into the Webhook key field in FareHarbor.
- Click Save.

2b. Enabling Smartwaiver for multiple Dashboards
Note: Watch the video below to see how to set up Smartwaiver on multiple Dashboards.
If you want to enable Smartwaiver in multiple FareHarbor Dashboards, use the following instructions through the completion of step 2 on your primary Dashboard.
After all of step 2 has been completed, save the API key and Webhook key for the primary Smartwaiver Dashboard the client wants to use somewhere in your computer (Notepad/Google docs). You will need to use the same API & Webhook keys in the FH advanced settings on all related Dashboards.
- Disable the Webhook connection at the Smartwaiver setting level in the Smartwaiver portal using the link in the FH Dashboard Advanced settings ending in “/m/rest/?webhooks.” We do this because otherwise the main settings will supersede the waiver settings and not let us attach waivers to multiple Dashboards.
- Next navigate to “Create/Edit Waivers on the Smartwaiver Dashboard”.
- Go to the waiver you wish to attach with the FareHarbor Dashboard and click Edit.
- Once in the waiver settings, select Options.
- Scroll down and click on the Webhook.
- Click on the checkbox “Send Webhook for this waiver”.
- Make sure that “Web Endpoint” option is selected.
- Go back to the FareHarbor Dashboard which you want to connect to this waiver and copy the Webhook URL in the FH Advanced settings once you enable Smartwaiver.
- Paste the FH Webhook URL into “Webhook endpoint.”
- Make sure the Email Validation option is set to Do not wait for email validation. Fire a Webhook immediately after the document is completed.
Make sure the checkbox “Send a verification email to participants that complete your waiver online” is unchecked. We want this box unchecked so we don’t have to wait for ID validation from the customer in order for fields to populate in the manifest.
This photo reflects how important it is that we have the correct fields filled out or else the webhooks are not going to fire properly.
You can see from the image that because the checkbox is unchecked and the email validation field is not set to “Do not wait for email validation. Fire a Webhook immediately after the document is completed”, that this Webhook is not going to function properly.Click on the Publish option on the top of the screen.
- Click Publish Your Waiver.
- Proceed to step 3 below.
Once you are done with this Dashboard, go to Smartwaiver and “copy” (duplicate) the existing waiver to create a new waiver to connect to all associated Dashboards. Every Dashboard that you connect to the Smartwaiver account will need an individual copy of the waiver. Repeat the steps in the Enable Smartwaiver in multiple FareHarbor Dashboards section for every waiver copy.
3. Add waiver in FareHarbor
- Go to Settings > Waivers.
Add a new waiver:
- Waiver name: Waiver
- Label name: Use this if the company uses more than one type of waiver, otherwise you can leave blank
- Waiver ID: From the Smartwaiver Dashboard, click Create/Edit Waivers on the left-hand side of the screen. Then click the waiver itself, which will pull it up in a new tab. Copy and paste only this part of the URL: https://www.smartwaiver.com/w/559ae65f12988/web/
Create waiver:

4. Create waiver custom field
The Title and Description you enter for this field will be shown in the customer’s confirmation.
- Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
Add a new custom field:
- Field type: Waiver
- Internal name: Waiver
- Title: Next Step: Your Waivers
- Description: Please have all participants complete the online waiver prior to arrival. It’s quick and easy! This email can be forwarded so other participants you have paid for can also sign.
Create the field and add the waiver:

See Hawaii Shark Encounters for an example.
5. Add waiver field to item
Add as a whole-booking field to the item(s) requiring a waiver.
Tip: Use the Price Sheets Overview to add the waiver field to multiple items at once.
- Go to Items > select the item.
- Go to the item’s Options & Prices.
- Select Whole-booking fields.
- Click Add custom field and select the waiver field.
Click Add:

This is the client’s responsibility. For bookings that had been made before the custom field was attached to an item, the custom field will need to be added manually on a booking-by-booking basis. They will then need to re-send the confirmation email. Please refer to this help page to learn how this can be done.
6. Update manifest
Update the company’s default custom manifest to include the Waivers column. Optionally, include the Waiver Breakdown column to display participants’ name, age, and (optionally) email address when viewing the manifest.

Disabling Smartwaiver
Temporarily disabling Smartwaiver
To temporarily disable Smartwaiver, open all “Waiver” custom fields in the Dashboard and make them “Hidden” on the base sheet.
Permanently disabling Smartwaiver
To permanently remove Smartwaiver from a Dashboard, open the Price Sheet Overview and remove all Waiver custom fields from all items. Then, delete all Waiver custom fields. Finally, under Bookings in the Advanced Company Settings, uncheck the box for Smartwaiver.
