Permalinks
Last updated: October 8, 2018
What is a permalink?
A permalink is the section of text after the URL that defines the page. Looks like www.domain.com/permalink/
Permalinks are an ideal place for keywords. In addition to the page title, h1, and meta description, you should have keywords in your permalink, which could include locations or activity types. For example, if a company on Maui had a page labeled “Tours”, it might be a good idea to have the permalink be something like /maui-tours/
Permalinks should be all lowercase, not contain “and” or other conjunctions or “a” or other articles if it can be helped, and are separated by dashes if it is more than one word.
For example, a page titled “The Best Tours on Oahu and Maui” would have an optimized permalink that looks like “best-tours-oahu-maui” so the full URL would look like www.domain.com/best-tours-oahu-maui/
How to edit permalinks
Permalinks can be edited in 2 places.
- All pages/activities view – click on “Quick Edit” on the page you want to edit on the all pages view. The permalink is determined by the “Slug” section.
- Under the title – on the backend of individual pages and activity pages, the permalink is located immediately under the title. Click “Edit” next to the permalink to change it.
Parent Pages
A parent page is a page that has one or more child pages nested under it. In terms of permalinks, the child page is nested under the parent page permalink. Looks like www.domain.com/parent-page/child-page/
Parent pages should be used as category pages for activities and similar pages on a website.
How to nest pages
Pages can be nested in 2 places.
- All pages/activities view – click on “Quick Edit”. Select the parent page type in the drop down labeled “Post Parent Type” then select the parent page title in the drop down labeled “Parent”
- Right sidebar – in the backend of the page you want to nest, select the parent page type in the section labeled “Post Parent Type” in the right sidebar. Above that section, there is another section labeled “Page Attributes” where you can select the parent page title from the drop down.
Important things to remember
- Parent pages can crossover from page types. This means that a Page can act as a parent page for an Activity and an Activity can act as a parent page for a Page. This is what the “Post Parent Type” field determines.
- Repeating keywords in permalinks does not do much for SEO. Try to add a bit of variety in permalink keywords so your site ranks for different words or shorten the permalink to avoid repetition and make it more readable. For example, if your parent page is called “Maui Tours” and your activity page is called “Haleakala Crater Hiking Tour”, your permalink should look something like this /maui-tours/haleakala-crater-hike/
- Try to keep permalinks for new sites the same as the old site. This helps cut down on the amount of redirects needed. Only change the permalink if the SEO team recommends it. For example, if a contact page has this permalink /contact-us/ it is best to keep it that way on the new site and not change it to /contact/
