SKUs and Internal Names
Last updated: August 4, 2025
In FareHarbor, a SKU is an abbreviated way of referring to an item, custom field, payment type, or other element in your Dashboard. SKUs are optional, but can come in handy when viewing calendars, bookings, or reports in your Dashboard.
Certain parts of your Dashboard can also have an internal name, which may not necessarily be a shorter version of a name, but is used in the same way.
SKUs and internal names are never displayed to your customers. They’re simply a way to keep track of information when logged into your Dashboard.
To learn more about how SKUs and internal names are used, click into the sections below.
Item SKU
Updating an item’s SKU
You can view or update an item’s SKU by going to the Items section of your Dashboard, selecting an item, then going to Info & Policies > Description. The item name and SKU is located below the description.

Where is it used?
Item SKUs are displayed in the following places in your Dashboard:
- Item calendar
- Bookings calendar
- Availability overview
- Book form (when making a direct booking in the Dashboard)
- Rebooking summary
- Booking overview
- Reports
- Invoices
Customer type SKU
There are two places you can set a customer type’s SKU: in your main Dashboard settings and in an individual item’s settings. If a SKU is entered in an item’s settings, it will only be used for that specific item.
Updating a customer type’s SKU
To update a customer type’s SKU from your main settings, go to Settings > Customer Types and click Edit next to the customer type.

To update a customer type’s SKU from an item’s settings, go to the Items section of your Dashboard, select an item, then go to Options & Prices. Click the edit
icon next to the customer type.
Where are they used?
Customer type SKUs are displayed in the following places in your Dashboard:
- Item settings: Options & Prices
- Availability settings: Price
- Booking overview
- Rebooking summary
- Manifest
- Reports
If a customer type has a SKU specified in both the main settings and an individual item’s settings, the SKU specified in the item setting will be displayed.
Custom field SKU and internal name
Custom fields can have both an internal name and a SKU. An internal name is required for every custom field, whereas the SKU is optional. The title is what’s displayed to your customers.
Updating a custom field’s SKU or internal name
You can update these settings by going to Settings > Custom Fields, then finding the field you want to update and clicking Edit field. From the custom field’s settings, open the Edit field menu and go to the Settings & Pricing section.

You can also access the Edit field menu from an item’s Options & Prices, if the custom field has been added to that item. Updating the internal name or SKU from an item’s Options & Prices will change the field’s settings everywhere it is used, not just for that item.
Where are they used?
Custom field internal names are used in the following places in your Dashboard:
- Custom field settings
- Item settings: Options & Prices
- Search fields
- Custom Field Answers report: filters

Payment type SKUs are displayed in legacy reports.
Transportation SKUs
If you have transportation enabled, you can use SKUs for both pickup locations and lodging.
Updating transportation SKUs
To update a pickup location’s SKU, go to Settings > Transportation, then select the Pickup Locations tab. Click Edit next to the location you want to update.

To update a lodging option’s SKU, go to Settings > Transportation, then select the Lodging tab. Click Edit next to the option you want to update, then click Edit again below the name.

Where are they used?
Pickup location and lodging SKUs will be displayed in the following places in your Dashboard:
- Transportation settings
- Booking overview
- Manifest
- Advanced reports
Tax type SKUs
You can edit a tax type SKU from your company’s settings. Navigate to Settings > Bank & Payments > Tax, and select Edit>> next to the tax type you would like to change. In the “SKU” field, type in the new internal name you would like, then select Save.
Where are they used?
Tax type SKUs will be displayed to logged-in users of your Dashboard and in reports. SKUs for tax types are particularly useful in reporting where it may be useful to note if certain tax types have associated tax codes.

Internal-only content. Don't copy and paste to anyone.
Customer type SKUs are also used in the Channel API setup process (Settings > Integrations > Channel) when adding customer type mappings.
Analytics services (Settings > Analytics & Tracking) can be given SKUs, but these are only displayed to FH Admins.
Gift card types can be given a SKU, but so far the SKU is not displayed anywhere outside the gift card type settings.
Location names essentially function as SKUs; they are only shown internally to logged-in Dashboard users, never to customers.
SKUs have the option of being shown on receipts and emails. To enable or disable this setting, go to Advanced company settings > Setup > “Show dropdown option SKU in receipts and emails”.
