Overlapping memberships
Last updated: June 27, 2025
Compared to standard memberships, which only allow a member to hold one active membership at a time, overlapping memberships allow a member to hold multiple active memberships at the same time.
Overlapping memberships may be particularly helpful for businesses offering memberships that include multiple members (such as a family), passes, punch cards, or other solutions that allow members to purchase a set number of uses within a given time frame.
Overlapping memberships must be enabled by FareHarbor. Please reach out to FareHarbor Support for assistance.
Creating an overlapping membership
Configuring membership settings
- Navigate to the Settings tab, and click the Memberships option (located in the sidebar).
- Click the + New membership button.
Enter the new membership’s identifying information.
- Name of the membership
* - SKU (unique identifying number or code)
- Any membership notes that should be available to Dashboard users
*This information is required.- Name of the membership
Configure the Length of membership setting. This setting determines how long the membership is active.
- Duration determines the membership’s availability based upon length of time. For example, a membership could be configured to last for 365 days.
- This setting allows for units of time based upon days, weeks, months, or years.
- When using duration, also specify whether the membership will become active on the day of membership purchase or the day of the customer’s first booking.
Date range determines the membership’s availability based upon specific start and end dates. For example, a membership could be configured to last from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
(Note: If a membership is renewed or purchased after the specified end date, it will be valid for the same date range in the following year.)
- Duration determines the membership’s availability based upon length of time. For example, a membership could be configured to last for 365 days.
Configure the If purchased while membership is still active setting. This setting determines whether a new membership can begin within the time frame of an already-active membership.

To configure an overlapping membership:
- If Duration is selected for the length of membership, select Begin membership on date of purchase.

- If Date range is selected for the length of membership, select Begin membership on the same start date as active membership.

Determine whether the customer should receive email notifications.
- If a customer should be notified before their membership expires, check the Send reminder emails one week before membership expires option.
- Select which canned message should be sent to the customer.
If no canned messages are available, email notifications can be set up later once a new canned message is available. (Note: Only canned messages of the Newly expired membership message type can be associated with a membership.)
Click the Create membership button to finalize your new membership.
Just like a standard membership, overlapping membership settings can be edited. Click the Edit option associated with the membership under Settings > Memberships to make changes.
Setting up benefits
Both standard and overlapping membership benefits determine the details of a membership experience, including:
- What discount(s) a member will receive
* - The maximum allowable uses per membership
- Conditions for membership usage (such as associated items and customer types)
- Check-in scanning capability
*This information is required to set up benefits.

Maximum uses for overlapping memberships
By default, benefits set up for an overlapping membership will apply to each active membership.
If a benefit’s maximum uses should be enforced to prevent usage applying to every overlapping membership, check the Enforce the maximum uses per availability across all of a member’s active memberships option.
For example:
- If a member has four active overlapping memberships and a benefit that can be used up to once per day, then the member could redeem up to four benefits per day by default.
- If the Enforce the maximum uses per availability across all of a member’s active memberships option is checked, this member could only use one benefit per day even though four overlapping memberships are active.
Next steps
Once configured, the overlapping membership can be added to an item. Complete the following steps as needed for your setup.
