FareHarbor Sites: FAQs
Last updated: June 17, 2025
Whether you’re wondering if FareHarbor’s managed websites are right for your business, or just want to know more about your own FareHarbor Site, you’ll find answers to commonly asked questions below.
If your question isn’t addressed below, feel free to drop us a line!
How are my domain, site, and email hosted?
Domains
You are responsible for purchasing and maintaining ownership of your domain through a domain registrar. You should be able to access the registrar easily and have the authority to alter DNS records and/or nameservers.
FareHarbor Sites offers to upkeep the DNS records your site needs to display securely to customers and ensure any adjustments after go-live are timely made. Transferring DNS to FareHarbor is not required to get a FareHarbor Site however. If you are interested in managing your own DNS when moving to a FareHarbor Site, please specify that when inquiring.
To manage DNS for a FareHarbor Site, we’ll either need the login for your domain registrar (found by searching the domain at who.is; examples include GoDaddy, NameCheap, etc) in order to change the nameservers, or we’ll need you to change the nameservers yourself to point the domain at our host server.
If you plan to change your own nameservers we will need to closely coordinate the timing to ensure that everything is configured properly and we may request a listing of your DNS records before you make the switch.
Web Hosting
We host FareHarbor websites with Amazon Web Services (AWS) which is widely used by the internet’s biggest websites like Lyft, Netflix, and Expedia to offer secure, high-speed hosting. Once your new site is live, you are free to download a backup of your old website files and cancel your old web hosting (just be sure you aren’t also cancelling email hosting if that’s something you’d like to keep with your previous host provider).
We do not offer email hosting (hosting email @yourdomain.com). If you already have this set up through another host, we’ll be sure to properly configure the MX records on our end so that emails route correctly. If you are concerned and want to be sure, go ahead and send us over your MX records or email host login and we’ll cross-check everything. If you don’t currently have email hosting at your domain, we generally recommend Google’s GSuite tools, but can configure your site for any email host of your choice as long as we are provided with the MX Records.
What happens to my old site?
When you go live on a FareHarbor website we simply point your domain to the new site on our server instead of to your old site’s host server. This means that your old site is not deleted or modified in any way. If you’d like to retain files or information from your old site, you can backup the files from the server where you were hosting it, and they will remain hosted on your old server setup until you cancel that hosting.
Do I have to change my domain’s name servers to FareHarbor’s to go live?
No! It is not required that your name servers be pointed to FareHarbor’s. Please specify if you would like to manage your own DNS when inquiring about a FareHarbor Site.
Note: Even if you do not want FareHarbor to manage your DNS for you, someone (IT department, web developer, etc.) must have the access and authority required to update those settings to eventually migrate to the FareHarbor Site. FareHarbor offers to complete this step for you if you can delegate domain registrar/DNS access to us.
Who owns what?
Content & Brand Materials
You retain all copyright and ownership of the content and brand materials on the website we build for you. This includes—but isn’t limited to—your logo, photos, text copy, and any graphics you provide us.
FareHarbor Templates
Because our templates are custom developed in-house for the purpose of providing optimized websites that integrate seamlessly with the FareHarbor dashboard, we retain ownership of the template itself. This means that if for any reason you were to leave FareHarbor, your content & brand materials can go with you, but not the templated site.
More about our Web Content Specialists
Our Web Content Specialists are dedicated to building attractive, conversion-friendly websites for FareHarbor companies.
Our Specialists have collectively spent hours examining websites for tour and activity companies. They’ve seen the best, and the worst. They have also drawn from a wide pool of industry-specific research regarding best practices, user experience, and optimized booking flow.
The skills of this team encompass the intertwined tenets of writing, design, user experience, and web development. The unifying thread is that all our Web Content Specialists are young, avid adventurers with a keen first-hand experience of how travelers and vacationers like to book their experiences. Mix that with acute technical know-how, and you’ve got a team crafting business-changing websites.
Internal-only content. Don't copy and paste to anyone.
Note: If a client requests login access to adjust their FareHarbor site, send the request over to the FareHarbor Sites team. You can do this by assigning the ticket to FH Sites in Zendesk or, if you don’t use Zendesk, by reaching out to them in the #fareharborwebsites Slack channel.
What is CookiePro?
Please visit the following links for the complete breakdown of what CookiePro offers:
What is the link we can share with the client for them to get CookiePro?
The link is: https://www.cookiepro.com/pricing/. The client must use the redemption code: FareHarbor.
Why is this an external partnership rather than developing our own solution?
Global privacy laws are constantly changing and are one of the most complicated regulatory topics in the present day. We have decided that it is best to partner with an industry leader in these topics in order to ensure a possible solutions for our clients.
Who owns the relationship with the client, FareHarbor or CookiePro?
CookiePro will own the relationship regarding the client’s Cookie banner. It is similar to Smartwaiver; it is a self-sign up process, and we only troubleshoot the plug-in assuming that they are FHS clients, itself but not the product. They can learn more with our referral link and will receive one month free by using code FareHarbor. FareHarbor will maintain the relationship with our clients when it comes to all things Dashboard + FHS-related.
Compliance of FHS with global website/GDPR/privacy/etc. regulations is at the risk of our clients. We are not responsible for our clients following applicable laws/regulations, but if they are FHS users, it is our duty to set them up for success with our product offering.
Can my client use another company that is not CookiePro?
At this time, our sites only have compatibility with CookiePro, Complianz, and iubenda. Upon extreme solutions, escalate this to your manager and we will determine a solution which could possibly involve integrating with another system.
Where can I go if I have additional questions about CookiePro?
Start by heading to the CookiePro website. If you still have questions, please post in #softwarepartnerships.
In the email sent to marketing we state that “we won’t longer be making updates to our native cookie policy moving forward”. So, the main question is here: how do our clients know when they won’t be compliant anymore?
Data privacy compliance is under the client’s responsibility. It is their responsibility to stay informed and choose the right solution based on both their business and legal needs. Those needs are specific to each business, but also dependent on the country there are in.
