Best Practice Setup Overview
Combo items in FareHarbor are when a company offers two of their tours, activities, or rentals as one combined offering. This can be built in FareHarbor in a few different ways, depending on client needs. Some of the following things to consider before building are:
- Availabilities – should customers make only one booking or multiple?
- Do we need separate items and a combo item?
- Do we need to use cart/suggested items?
- Resources – can we use the length of availability or do they need to be manipulated more carefully?
- Pricing – should the customers pay once or separately for the combo item?
- Should promo codes be utilized and how? Can one code for used for the entire combo offering or do specific codes need to be generated for each booking?
All of the criteria above affects the way combo items should be built in FareHarbor. Below are examples of two best practice setups for combo items. These setups should be discussed with the client in consideration with their needs to find the best fit.
The Prefer selecting the same day on the calendar view, if available setting will be enabled by default, but we recommend disabling it if the bookability window(s) for one item does not intersect with the bookability window(s) for the other item.

Option One: One Combo Item Setup
- Create the client’s activity, rental, or tour items. For instance, one item for a SUP Guided Tour and one item for a Snorkel Tour. Add resources to each item as needed.
Create the combo item, a combination of two of their offerings into one activity. For example, “SUP & Snorkel Combo”.
- Confirmation notes & description should be clear that this offering is a combination of two activities. Itineraries are recommended to highlight the combo schedule!

- Add customer types and custom fields.
Add resources to the combo item. Resource setup should take into account the combo item itinerary.
- The first combo activity should use the corresponding resource from availability start to the duration of the first activity. For example, if the first activity of the combo item is a 2.5 hour SUP tour, the SUP resource should be used from availability start for 2.5 hours long.
- Add the second activity resources. These resources will need to begin after the first activity is complete. For example, after the 2.5 hour SUP tour and 30 minute break for lunch, then the boat seats resource should begin for the second activity. In order to accomplish this with resources, the resource should begin negative hours from availability start times. This tells the system to start x hours after availability start time. Therefore, if the second activity of the begins 3 hours after the availability start time, resources should be used for -3 hours before availability start time for the duration of the second activity. See the photo below for an example.

- Create combo item availabilities. The start time of these availabilities will be the start time of the first activity. The duration should be the length of the first and second activity combined. This is important because the combo item availability will overlap with the two single activity items. In addition, you are giving the customer an accurate reflection of how long the combo activity will last – appearing in email communication.
Option Two: Two Items Offered as a Combo Setup
- Create the client’s activity, rental, or tour items. For instance, one item for a SUP Guided Tour and one item for a Snorkel Tour. Add resources to each item as needed.
- Unlike option one, these two items will not be accompanied by combo item that includes both the activities in one. Instead, the two activity items will be linked by promo codes and suggested items after purchase.
- Create a campaign for each activity item. For instance, Combo Deal 15% off – Snorkel Tour and Combo Deal 15% off – SUP Tour.
Create a code for the campaign with unlimited uses. This code will be provided in suggested items confirmation notes for the customer to apply on the other activity item. Repeat for both campaigns.

- Create a code redemption custom field
[Campaign code]for each campaign. Utilize the internal name to differentiate.- Attach the corresponding campaign onto the code redemption custom field.
- Set the pricing of the campaign. For instance, if this combo deal offers 15% off the activity, the campaign should adjust the total by -15%. Repeat for both code redemption fields.
- Note: If the client requires a setup in which the customer pays the full price of the combo initially through one item, this setup will need to be adjusted. Instead, the code should adjust the total by the full price of the item rather than a percentage, so that when the customer books the second activity is fully discounted.
- Enable suggested items under Advanced Settings > Bookings > Suggested items.
Create a booking flow for each item in the combo deal.
- Add Suggested Items Confirmation notes onto the flow. This is where the code for the combo campaign will be placed. The Confirmation notes should urge the customer to book the combo deal, while providing instructions.
- Repeat for the second activity item.

Attach your suggested item flows onto the activity items in the combo deal.
- The SUP Tour item should use the Snorkel Tour suggested item flow. As a result, the customer will receive the code for the Snorkel Tour in their confirmation email with a link to purchase at a discounted rate. See the photo below for an example:

- Repeat for the second activity item.
- Add your code redemption fields onto the whole booking level of your activity items. The SUP Tour item should accept codes from the SUP Tour campaign, etc.
- Code redemption and custom field placement can be adjusted to fit specific client needs. Please discuss with them to find the best fit.
Note: Codes created in step 3 cannot restrict code uses per party. If this is a concern of the client, code generators will need to be attached to each customer type, instead of using one standard code provided in suggested items confirmation notes for the combo.
Benefits
Option One: One Combo Item Setup
- This option is recommended to use when possible.
- The customer only has to book once, because both activities are combined into one item.
- Pricing is easy to update for the combo item, because it is only contained in one item.
- No cart/promo code setups needed.
- Availability displays full length of the activity.
- Manifests are accurate for each leg of the trip.
- Resources are used for specific durations of each activity instead of over or under using inventory.

Option Two: Two Items Offered as a Combo Setup
- Client/customer have more flexibility with the activity start times & dates.
- Can provide discount code in confirmation notes.
- Cons:
- Pricing is managed with promo codes, campaigns, and redemption fields which can be configured in several ways.
