Tagging items
Last updated: May 30, 2025
FareHarbor’s tagging system helps categorize tours and activities for improved discoverability, better search performance, and more effective distribution through affiliate channels.
What are tags?
Tags are short labels that describe the type of experience your item offers. Tagging is used internally by FareHarbor and externally by affiliate partners to discover, organize, and promote your offered tours and activities. Examples of tags are “Bike Tour”, “Museum”, or “Water Activities”.
Benefits of using tags
- Boosted visibility in distribution: Tagged items are easier for affiliates and resellers to find and promote.
- Improved search matching: Tags enhance how your items appear in tools like the Marketplace and other affiliate interfaces.
- Drive more bookings: Accurate tagging makes your listings more relevant to partners and helps increase conversions.
Our research shows that affiliates prefer to search by tag, so tagging directly influences booking volume through reseller channels.
How to tag items
To tag your items, tagging must first be enabled on your Dashboard. If you do not see the tagging options, please contact FareHarbor Support.
To add or edit tags on an item:
- Go to the Items tab in your Dashboard.
- Select the item you want to edit.
- Navigate to Info & Policies > Tags.
- Choose the relevant tags from the available list.
- Click Save changes.
Best practices for tagging
- Be specific: Select the most accurate tags that reflect the experience.
- Stay updated: Update tags if your item content changes.
- Avoid using too many tags: Limit to around 5 tags per item for the best search relevance.
- Only use available tags: Tags are predefined to maintain consistency across the platform.
If you’re unsure which tags to use, reach out to FareHarbor Support for assistance.
Internal-only content. Don't copy and paste to anyone.
Currently, we use item tagging to meet the requirements for certain API partnerships. This functionality will be expanded soon (for example, assigning tags to companies), which will give us more flexibility for future integrations.
Permissions
The permission to create, edit, and assign tags is only available for FareHarbor Admin permission groups. These permissions are managed under the Admin section.

Creating and managing tags
Tags are managed in the FareHarbor Admin Dashboard under Settings > Tags.
Creating a tag group
Depending on what kinds of tags you want to be able to assign, tag groups can be more general (Activity Type, Audience Type) or specific to certain regions or activities (Hawaii, Escape Rooms).
To create a tag group:
- Go to the Settings section of the Admin Dashboard.
- Select Tags from the sidebar.
- Click New tag group.
- Enter a name (this can be changed later if needed).
- Click Create tag group.
The Google TTD (Google Things To Do) admin-only tag group is not exposed to charters.
Adding tags to a tag group
- From the Admin Dashboard, go to Settings > Tags.
- Click Edit, next to the tag group name.
- Click New tag.
- Enter a display name (this is what will be displayed in the Dashboard when assigning tags to an item, and can be changed later if needed).
- Enter an internal name (This cannot be changed later!).
Click Create tag.

Here’s a list of example tags based on SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Industry Descriptions.
Reordering tag groups
Tag groups can be reordered using the
icon. This affects the order tag groups are displayed in an item’s settings.

Note: The tags within each group will always be listed alphabetically.
Enabling item tagging on a company
Item tagging is enabled on a per-company basis, and can be done from the company’s advanced settings.
From the company’s Dashboard, type Shift + , then go to the Setup section. Enable the item tagging setting, then save your changes.

Assigning tags to items
If a charter has permission to edit items, they also have permission to tag their items.
Once item tagging is enabled for a company, you can assign tags from the Items section of the Dashboard.
To assign tags to an item:
- Go to Items and select an item.
- Go to Info & Policies > Tags.
- Select which tags you want to assign to the item.
Save your changes.
