Gift card fee rules
Last updated: February 17, 2021
FareHarbor collects booking fees on gift card sales according to the state and country specific regulations outlined below. FareHarbor will automatically determine whether booking fees should be collected on gift card sales based on the company’s location. The Gift card booking fees advanced company setting can be used to disable fees regardless of state or country regulations but will not enable fees in locations where fees are prohibited.
When a gift card is used to pay for a booking, it will be applied toward the booking price + tax. Booking fees are only calculated for the remaining amount due. If the remaining amount is zero, the booking fee is zero. See examples.

Online redemption + booking fees
When a gift card is used to pay for a booking, it is applied toward the booking price + tax. Booking fees are only calculated for the remaining amount due. If the remaining amount is zero, the booking fee is zero. Examples below:
6% Fee
Let’s say a customer has a $100 gift card, and they want to book an activity that costs $100 plus $5 tax ($105).
After applying the gift card to the price + tax, the remaining amount is $5.
To calculate the booking fee on the remaining amount, we use the following calculation:
originalFee * (remaining / pricePlusTax). The original fee in this case would be $6 (6% of $100). So,
6 * (5 / 105)gives us a booking fee of $0.29.The total amount due after the customer applies the gift card is $5.29.
Here is the same example in spreadsheet form.
State-specific fee
Note that gift card fees may vary by state. For example, with a minimum fee of $10, the calculation would look like this: 10 * (5 / 105) resulting in a booking fee of $0.48. See gift card fees by location.
No fee
If the price + tax is $100, and the customer pays using a $100 gift card, then the remaining amount is $0 and no booking fee is applied.
Edge cases
If a gift card is being bought from a company with fee rules (such as Hawaii) and the book form includes a required discount field below the GC field, the system calculates the fee for the subtotal and the discount separately, resulting in a booking fee that may appear lower than expected.
In the example below:
- 6% of $115.00 is $6.90, rounded down to $5.00 (because the company is in Hawaii)
- 6% of -$23.00 is -$1.38
- So the booking fee is $5.00 – $1.38 = $3.62
