Last updated: April 18, 2025
To see the current theme of any FareHarbor site, in the WordPress dashboard navigate to Appearance > Themes (/edit/wp-admin/themes.php).
Mauna Kea
- Overview: Of all our themes, Mauna Kea has the most modern design and it’s the most efficient to build on.
- LSS: Features unique to Mauna Kea are the jumbotron row, the ability to set featured activity row, single activity block, corner rounding, and image button styles in Appearance > Look & Feel > Styles (/edit/wp-admin/themes.php?page=look-feel), quick details on activity pages, and background overlay intensity options. Mauna Kea does not support sub sub menus.
- WCS: This is the default theme that we use and should be used for all new builds.
Note: Mauna Kea is the only theme that FareHarbor sites actively onboards clients on to. No other theme should be used for building a new site.
Mauna Kea Theme Features
Jumbotron Row – Heroes and CTAs
The purpose for the Jumbotron row is to create page titles and callout areas.

Row Heights:
- Set row height to “Auto” For page titles or areas where the content should dictate the height of the row. Don’t use this in conjunction with a video background as it will be too short
- Set row height to “Medium – 50%” – Good for featuring gift cards or promos. This helps break the page up and create separation between content and calls to action. Works well in situations when a slideshow is not needed in the homepage hero.
- Set row height to “Tall – 85%” – Large CTAs with video backgrounds
DO use “Text Area Width” to keep the line length from reading too long. Be sensible about this, 50% or 75% should be good in most cases.
Percentages in heights are relative to viewport height. So Medium – 50% is half of the height of the browser viewport area.
Activity Grid
For sites that have more than 3-5 activities:
DO use Activity Grid to display activities.

DO use “Learn More” buttons by default. We should always funnel users to the activity details page.
DO have the “summary” field filled out for each activity. This is the description that appears for every activity. This should be brief, yet descriptive. Be mindful of overusing bulleted lists and custom text formating.
DO use Featured Activity row to display an activity or multiple activities more prominently.
When using a Featured Activity row, make sure to remove the activity from the Activity Grid.
DO NOT build custom activity blocks just to create a different look. When you do this, we lose the ability to make future updates & improvements to the theme. Instead, choose one of the preset styles under “Appearance > Look & Feel > Styles > Single Activity Block Style“
Single Activity Block Style – Card

Single Activity Block Style – Plain

Single Activity Block Style – Plain Squished

Featured Activity
If the site has 3 or less activities OR you would like to display a more prominent activity, use Featured Activity row.

DO use “Learn More” buttons by default. We should always funnel users to the activity details page.
DO “Flip” the activity row under “Options” when using multiple featured activities one below the other. This creates a nice Zig-Zag effect. and helps differentiate each activity.

DO NOT build custom activity blocks just to create a different look. When you do this, we lose the ability to make future updates & improvements to the theme. Instead, choose one of the preset styles under “Appearance > Look & Feel > Styles > Single Activity Block Style“
Image Buttons
All checkboxes/toggles have been removed from image buttons. Just insert the content and select a background image.
DO choose one of the preset styles under “Appearance > Look & Feel > Styles > Single Activity Block Style“
Global Site Styles
All of the stylisticly related toggles now live under “Appearance > Look & Feel > Styles“
Use this area to decide how you want the Activity Blocks, Featured Activities, and Image Buttons to appear.
Corner Rounding
This controls the corner rounding on all elements throughout the site. Buttons, Activity Blocks, Sidebars, etc.
Row / Column / Anything with Backgrounds
Custom Backgrounds area has been revamped. Most toggles have been removed.
By default, when you add a background image to a row or column, it will automatically receive a dark overlay on top. You can control the overlay intensity using the Background Overlay Intensity select menu.
Choose from 4 options: No Overlay, Mild, Default, and Intense for varying degrees of intensity.
Subsequently, use “Wants light overlay on background image” to change the color of the overlay from black to white. This is a good option to use when the overall look of the site is light colors.

Older Themes
Lilikoi 2.0
- Overview: This is the most versatile and customizable of all our themes.
- LSS: For updates and tickets, be aware that Lilikoi sites could have custom CSS.
- WCS: This theme should not be used for building new sites.
Lychee
- Overview: Lychee has the exact same functionality as Rambutan, but everything is framed within the site background.
- LSS: For updates and tickets, be aware that Lychee sites could have custom CSS.
- WCS: This theme should not be used for building new sites.
Rambutan
- Overview: This theme introduced the row and block system we currently use. It has the same basic functionality as Lilikoi 2.0, but looks less modern.
- LSS: For updates and tickets, be aware that Rambutan sites could have custom CSS.
- WCS: This theme should not be used for building new sites.
Cherimoya
- Overview: This theme was designed specifically for the new PacWhale website. Because of this certain features are not designed to be as flexible as other themes.
- LSS: Much of Cherimoya’s design is derived directly from the client, so it has some quirks like default body font size, emphasized subheadings and sub labels, and activity block appearance.
- WCS: This theme should not be used for building new sites.
Lilikoi
- Overview: This is our oldest, most restrictive theme.
- LSS: If you get a ticket requesting something outside of a basic edit (e.g., changing text or photos, rearranging menu), it’s not likely possible. Lilikoi is so drastically different from other themes that you cannot clone or export when working on a site update.
- WCS: This theme should not be used for building new sites.
