How do I update my menu bar tabs?
Last updated: January 2, 2025
Updating your menu bar tabs in WordPress is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard
- Go to your WordPress login page (e.g., yourwebsite.com/wp-admin) and enter your username and password.
2. Navigate to menus
- From the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Menus. This is where you’ll manage the navigation structure of your site.
3. Select the menu to edit
If your site has multiple menus (like a header and footer menu), choose the one you want to update. Use the Select a menu to edit dropdown, then click Select. This will likely be “Menu Header”.

4. Add new tabs (menu items)
To add a new page, category, post, or custom link:
In the left sidebar, you’ll see options like Pages, Activities, Posts, Custom Links, and Categories.
Expand the option you want to add. For example, if you want to add a new page, click on Pages.
Check the box next to the item you want to add to the menu, then click Add to Menu.
The new item will appear at the bottom of your current menu structure.
5. Organize your menu tabs
Drag and drop menu items to rearrange them.
To create submenus (dropdowns), drag an item slightly to the right under a parent item. It will “nest” under the main item, creating a dropdown structure.
Note: Some users may click on menu dropdowns, expecting them to expand. To avoid surprising these users with a new page, the parent item in a dropdown becomes unclickable when you place a submenu item beneath it. Consider adding another link to the parent item as a submenu item and renaming it as a “call to action”, like “View All Tours”.
6. Rename menu items (optional)
To change the name displayed on the menu, click the arrow on the right side of a menu item to expand it.
Modify the Navigation Label field to whatever you want the menu tab to display.
7. Remove unwanted menu items
To remove an item, expand it by clicking the arrow on its right side.
Click the Remove link at the bottom.
8. Save your changes
- After you’ve made your updates, click Save Menu to apply the changes.
9. Check your site
- Visit your site to make sure the menu updates look as expected.
