Date and Time Formatting
Last updated: April 29, 2019
When creating a new Dashboard, you’ll choose a language (which determines how dates are formatted) as well as time formatting for both company users and online customers. These settings can only be changed by FareHarbor Admins.
Dashboard settings
There are several settings that affect how users see dates and times in FareHarbor. Locate these settings in a company’s Dashboard by typing Shift + p. Date and time settings are located under the General section.
Language
This setting affects how dates and times are formatted in the Dashboard (in the future, it may also be used for additional localization options).
For example, the date “April 12th 2017” is represented as “12 April 2017” when the language is set to English – Australia.
The language also determines whether to display 12-hour or 24-hour time in the Dashboard, which can be further customized using the time formatting fields.
Time formatting
Here you’ll determine how times are formatted for company users and online customers. Choose from the following options:
- 12-hour time: For example, 11am – 1:30pm
- 24-hour time: For example, 11:00 – 13:30
- Default for company language: Will use the default format based on the language selected for the Dashboard
- Default for user language: Will use the default format based on the user’s browser locale (for online customers only)
Changing date and time formatting
If needed, FH Admins can update the language or time formatting in a company’s advanced settings.

All logged-in users of the Dashboard can change the info for a specific contact on a booking by clicking Edit contact info and choosing a preferred language (see here for the client-facing information). All emails sent to the customer will format dates based on the preferred language on the booking. Time formatting may or may not change, depending on the company’s settings.
Viewing dates and times in the Dashboard
Date and time formatting is applied to book forms, availabilities, manifests, and report data. For example, a company using English – United Kingdom as its language and 24-hour time for its users will see the following:

Company users
Logged-in users will always see dates and times according to their own company settings, including bookings made by affiliate companies who have different date or time settings.
Affiliates
Affiliate users viewing Dashboards for partner companies will see dates and times according to the affiliate’s company settings, not the partner company.
FH Admins
If you’re a FareHarbor Admin looking at a live company Dashboard, time formatting will vary depending on the settings of whatever company you’re looking at.
This is different than date formatting, which instead relies on the user’s company’s language (in this case, the FH Admin Dashboard).
This means if you’re viewing an Australian company’s Dashboard as a FH Admin, you will see dates and phone numbers formatted in English – United States because that is the language on the FH Admin Dashboard.
Viewing dates and times as an online customer
Date formatting
For customers booking online, we format dates for online book forms, confirmation pages, and emails based on the user’s browser settings. If the user’s browser language/locale setting is not supported by FareHarbor, the language specified for the company is used.
For example, if a user’s default language in Chrome is set to English (Australia), embeds and book forms for that user will use the Australian date format, regardless of the Dashboard’s language or the user’s IP address.

When the booking is completed, the confirmation page and email will retain the original formatting based on the anonymous user’s browser settings.
These settings are also saved on the contact in FareHarbor, as long as they are in one of FareHarbor’s supported languages (if not, the default language for the company will be used).
Time formatting
Time formatting for online customers will vary depending on the company’s Dashboard settings. For example, if time formatting for online customers is set to Default for user language, times will be formatted using the user’s browser settings.
If time formatting for online customers is set to Default for company language, times will be formatted based on the company’s language, regardless of where the online customer is located.
If set to 12-hour or 24-hour time, online customers will always times in that specific format, regardless of where they’re located.
In the below example, the online customer’s default language in Chrome is English (United States), but the time formatting for online customers is set to 24-hour time:

Notes
The following languages in FareHarbor use 12-hour time:
- English – United States
- English – Australia
- English – Canada
- English – United Kingdom
For companies existing prior to Dec. 2, 2017, time formatting for both company users and online users will be set to Default for company language.
For new companies created Dec. 2, 2017 or after, time formatting for company users will be set to Default for company language, and time formatting for online customers will be set to Default for user language.
If FareHarbor can’t determine a time format based on the company’s settings, 12-hour time will be used as a fallback.
