Legacy aggregate tax settings
Last updated: January 23, 2019
By default, FareHarbor uses in-line tax calculation, which allows for greater flexibility when taxing individual customer types and custom fields. However, if your Dashboard was set up prior to January 2017, you may still have aggregate taxes enabled on your Dashboard.
With aggregate taxes, taxes and percentages are applied to a booking’s subtotal rather than its individual parts. So, when calculating customer type tax, or any custom field taxes, we add up the subtotals of each taxable area, then multiply that amount by the tax rate.
| Customer Type | Subtotal | Tax % | Tax $ | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Person | $115 | – | – | – |
| Person | $115 | – | – | – |
| Person | $115 | – | – | – |
| Total | $345 | 11.5% | $39.67 | $384.67 |
This is opposed to in-line tax, which allows us to calculate tax on individual customer types and custom fields. This means we multiply each customer type subtotal by the tax rate first, so that each customer has its own subtotal and tax. Then, the taxed amounts are added up to give us a total tax amount.
| Customer Type | Subtotal | Tax % | Tax $ | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Person | $115 | 11.5% | $13.22 | $128.22 |
| Person | $115 | 11.5% | $13.22 | $128.22 |
| Person | $115 | 11.5% | $13.22 | $128.22 |
| Total | $345 | – | $39.66 | $384.66 |
If your Dashboard is set up to use aggregate taxes, you can switch to the new, in-line tax method by contacting Support and requesting that you be switched. Note: after switching to in-line, you will not be able to switch back to aggregate.
