Integrating Buoy
Last updated: June 13, 2025
Buoy is an insurance solution for boat rental companies and their renters to get insured on a per-trip basis. Integrating Buoy with your FareHarbor Dashboard provides a convenient, one-stop solution for protecting both you and your customers. Buoy’s insurance policy is compliant with the law and covers the renter. You can have peace of mind while staying compliant with relevant legislation, particularly the Florida Boating Safety Act of 2022.
Enabling Buoy
You can enable the Buoy integration in your Dashboard settings. Once enabled, the Buoy integration will appear on bookings with a registered boat listed as a resource for the selected customer type. More information can be found in the Setting up your Buoy integration section of this page.
To enable the Buoy integration:
- Go to Settings.
- Click the Advanced Company Settings icon.
- Navigate to the Integrations section.
- Check the Buoy Insurance box.
- Click Save changes.
Setting up your Buoy integration
Once Buoy is enabled on your Dashboard, click Items in your Dashboard navigation and select the Resources tab.
In the Resources tab, select the specific boat to which you’d like to add the Buoy integration. Go to the Settings for that resource. For the Buoy integration to work, you must add your boat’s registration number to the Registration number field.

After the registration number has been added to the resource and the resource has been added to the item, all bookings using this resource will have the option to purchase a Buoy insurance policy.
Purchasing an insurance policy
Once your Buoy integration is set up for a particular resource, customers may shop for their desired insurance policy after completing their booking.
On the confirmation page and email for their booking, customers are provided with a link to Get insured:

This link takes the user to Buoy’s insurance purchase page to shop for insurance policies. Here, users must have a Buoy account to purchase an insurance policy.
Once a user creates an account with Buoy, a Lets protect your trip screen will appear and they may click Continue to proceed to an underwriting questionnaire. After completing the questionnaire, Buoy will provide users with the insurance policy price based on their answers, and they may choose to purchase the policy or proceed without coverage.
Best practices
Resource names
The resource name will appear on the booking confirmation. We recommend removing any unnecessary wording for additional clarity.
- If the resource is a vessel with a given name (for example: North Star), you may keep that name.
- If the vessel does not have a specific name, the resource name should reflect the type of vessel (for example: Pontoon 1).
Registration numbers
If the resource does not have a registration number registered with Buoy, this field should be left blank. You should not enter any other number, as it will appear on the booking confirmation and may be mistakenly associated with Buoy.
Grouped resources
Integration with Buoy is not a good fit for items that have grouped resources (for example: multiple Jet Skis that are grouped as a single resource with multiple uses). Since a registration number is assigned to each vessel, the resource setup would need to be redone for the integration to work properly.
Frequently asked questions
Do all passengers need to purchase insurance?
No, only the operator of the vessel must purchase insurance. All passengers are covered by the operator’s insurance.
What does proof of insurance look like? What is presented to the operator?
Operators will receive a member certificate with the insurance information from Buoy.
Can an insurance policy be purchased for a generic vessel number or for something else other than the vessel?
No, the insurance policy is void if the boat registration number does not match the boat used during the activity.
Will a customer receive a refund for the insurance policy if the activity does not take place due to the boat being unavailable?
Yes, customers may request a refund from Buoy if the activity for which the policy was purchased does not take place.
Is it possible to rebook an activity for which an insurance policy has been purchased?
If a rebooking is required, the customer must cancel the original insurance certificate and purchase a new one. Insurance premium prices may differ from changing the booking.
