Using Google Hangouts for a training
Last updated: October 26, 2021
Primarily, we use Zoom for trainings. But if Zoom isn’t working before a training, or if the lag is so bad during a training that it ceases to be a productive call, use Google Hangouts before rescheduling.
Note: This process for screen sharing is a contingency plan for Zoom. We shouldn’t use Google hangouts for screen shares regularly, as there is not a recording function.
To use Google Hangouts for a training:
- Open Google hangouts. If you’re logged into your FareHarbor Gmail, you should automatically be taken to our Hangouts homescreen.

- Click Video Call (Note: Once the video call is started, you can turn off your camera to avoid an actual video call with your client. Just click the camera icon.)

- A new tab will open. Click on Start a new meeting, and another new tab will open. This is your meeting. You can also adjust audio and video settings.

- To begin the screen share, click Present now, Entire screen, and Screen one.

- You can get a screen share link similar to Zoom by clicking on Meeting details on the bottom left side of the window. You’ll see a link to access the screen share as well as a phone number and pin to call with, similar to Zoom.

Note: Using the phone feature is not recommended here. Explain to the client that you’ll call their cell and Google Hangouts is just for the screen share. This will still allow you to track your phone call in Close and have a recording of anything that may have come up during the training.
