How to set up rentals/inventory
Last updated: October 12, 2022
Tip: Check out this demo Dashboard and Onboarding Doc 3.0 (Americas and APAC offices) or Onboarding Doc 4.0 (EMEA office) to see the best practice setup in action.
Please also check the FareHarbor Internal Changelog for updated information about optimal setups. For more information about the development and communication of optimal setups related to any features, please see the Best Practice Communications Cheatsheet.
Best Practice Setup
- Customer Types are the inventory type, ex. Bike Rental, Snowmobile Rental, Kayak Rental
- Items by duration, ex. 2 Hour Rental, 4 Hour Rental, Full Day Rental
Each item has all customer type offerings attached to the corresponding resource and used for length of availability, ex. The Cruiser Bike customer type is attached to the Cruiser Bike resource

Duration of the item is set on the availability calendar. All bookings will then show the exact duration the rental is being used for.

Note: Rental setups can be done many ways. Above is the “standard” best practice, but depending on the companies needs, operational desires and inventory there are other options. However, all other options increase support requirements and are more complex. In instances of numerous offerings, additional grouping can be done by item by category (Bikes, Boats, etc).
Benefits
- Groups are likely to be booking the same duration but might want to choose different inventory types. This setup allows groups to book the same duration, but select different sizes and types of inventory
- No additional clicks required (Cart/Suggested)
- Very easy to manage and track duration of inventory by clients and support
- Resources will not break when updates to calendar availability duration are made because resources are set to “length of availability”. No additional updates will be required by client/support to resources.
- Calendar will display the availability time from start to finish to the end-customer.
