Troubleshooting Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for AMs
Last updated: January 4, 2024
The information on this page can help you troubleshoot issues when using GA4 with FareHarbor.
What to do if Google Analytics 4 is not tracking any data
- Ensure the GA4 measurement ID is the same in the GA4 property, on the website, AND the FareHarbor Dashboard.
- Verify the Analytics/GTM/Pixel Debugger tag assistant to confirm tag functionality without errors. Any issues will be flagged with a warning sign alongside the respective tag.
When GA is not tracking, most of the time the tag has been implemented incorrectly. The tag might need to be re-implemented correctly on the site. (submit an integration request if needed)
How to use the Analytics/GTM/Pixel Debugger Chrome extension
Note: The Analytics/GTM/Pixel Debugger is replacing the Google Tag Assistant Legacy as it is now deprecated.
This tool is helpful for verifying if a website has a GA account and if GA is tracking correctly.
The extension will show you all tags implemented on a website, not only Google tags.

When there is an error on a tag, you will see a red warning sign next to the tag name:
![]()
You can click on the arrow next to the tag name to get more information about the error.

For additional assistance with GA4 troubleshooting, you can submit a GA Help Request on the #amquestionqueue Slack channel Workflow.
What to do if Google Analytics 4 is not tracking monetization data (only)
- Ensure the GA4 measurement ID is the same in the GA4 property, on the website and in the FH Dashboard.
- Check on the FH Dashboard that the GA4 measurement ID has no typo. On the FH Dashboard, in the Analytics Service, ensure the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) type has been selected from the dropdown.
If the issue still persists you can submit a GA Help Request on the #amquestionqueue Slack channel Workflow.
What to do if the client’s website domain and FareHarbor URL are attributed as a referral source
- Check if the client domain and Fareharbor.com is on the Unwanted Referral List Admin > Data Stream Web > Configure tag setting > Show All > List unwanted referrals. (Do not add
https://www).
If the issue still persists you can submit a GA Help Request on the #amquestionqueue Slack channel Workflow.
Google Tag Manager troubleshooting
Google Tag Manager is used to track events on websites such as clicks, scroll, play video etc.
However, at this stage, it is not possible to track any e-commerce movement or any events inside the FH Lightframe.
Note: Do not add the GTM container script in the Dashboard, as it is currently not supported.
GTM is quite a complex process to troubleshoot as it will be different on every site. For any troubleshooting need, fill out the GA Help Request form from the WorkFlow section on the #amquestionqueue Slack channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my GA not match FH reports?
This is happening because a lot of clients are now more involved in looking at the data. The two reports will never match. I think it is important to let your clients know that GA is a tool to spot trends and not for revenue tracking purposes. This can be done through FH reporting as it is 100% accurate.
Why don’t my UA & GA4 match?
When we get this question, it is often because of the checkbox in your FH Dashboard. If they are not mirrored they will not match. Please ensure to check whether or not the checkbox is mirrored in the client FH Dashboard. You can refer to this text to reply to your client (please amend the text if the checkbox is enabled or the other way around): The difference in revenue between the two platforms is because of the checkbox in your FareHarbor’s Dashboard Analytics service. The checkbox Calendar, item grid, or book button is added to multiple websites is enabled for GA4, so GA4 will only record purchases made on your own website while the checkbox is deselected for UA, so UA will pick up all purchases from the client’s website but also affiliate, ASN links etc.. The checkbox should be either tick or untick for both platforms.
Why do UA and GA4 show a difference in revenue/conversion in Google Ads platform?
It is normal to see significant differences in Google Ads between UA and GA4 revenue and conversion. UA will always have a higher number of conversion and revenue than GA4, but that does not mean GA4 is less accurate or not tracking conversion properly. The difference is because of the two different attribution model in UA and GA4 platform.
In UA the attribution model is Last Click, so when there is a conversion and the Ads was the last interaction before the purchase, UA will send 100% of the credit to Google Ads. So the conversion number will be equal to 1 and 100% of the revenue.
In GA4 it is very different because of the Data Driven attribution model. When there is a conversion and again the click on the Ad was the last interaction before purchase, a conversion will be sent to Google Ads. However, before sending to Google Ads, GA4 will look at what interactions the user has had before making the purchase and distribute the credit of the conversion accordingly to all the interactions that have participated to the final conversion. Therefore, GA4 will send to Google Ads a fraction of the credit. So the conversion will be as an example 0.3 and not a rounded number (same for the revenue, it will be a fraction of the revenue). Consequently, you will see a lower number of conversion and revenue for GA4, because only a fraction of the credit is sent to Google Ads.”
Google Ads
Clients and marketing companies reach out in regards to adding Google Ads scripts to the Dashboard. This will not be the most accurate way to track Google Ads. They may push back on you when you say this, but the way that FH integrates with GA4 and the website can lead to some inaccurate data in Google Ads when using the Ads snippet. It is always best practice to follow the Google Ads help page to set up Google Ads.
- Add GA4 measurement ID to the FH Dashboard.
- Link Google Analytics to Google Ads in Google Analytics platform.
- Import conversion from Google Analytics to Google Ads in Google Ads platform.
*Google Ads snippet does not need to be added to the backend of FH as a custom code.
Common causes of data not flowing in GA4 (ecommerce or traffic)
- Incorrect GA4 measurement ID in FH Dashboard. Ensure the GA4 measurement is the exact same as in Google Analytics. Double check you are not using the property ID. The GA4 measurement ID always starts with
G-and is a combination of letters and numbers. You can locate it by going to Admin > Data Stream > Web Stream. The measurement ID is at the top right - Is the Google Tag added to the client’s website? Using Google Tag assistant, make sure the correct measurement ID is tagged on the website. You can check the Setup Assistant in the GA4 Admin section to verify if the data is flowing.
- Are they looking at the right location to see their ecommerce data? We have a lot of clients who think that all the Ecommerce data should just be on the homepage like in UA. The ecommerce data in GA4 are in the Monetization reports section under Ecommerce Purchases.
