If you are looking to assess where an existing client is at SEO-wise, these tools can give you a good idea of how a website is doing, and where it can be improved.
SEMRush
SEMRush has a lot of great tools to help you evaluate where a website is at SEO-wise, but we’re just going to focus on two of them.
You will need your own login to access the paid version of SEMRush.
Domain Analytics Overview
The Domain Analytics Overview gives you a snapshot of how much organic traffic a site is predicted to get monthly, how many keywords they currently rank for, and how many backlinks it has. To get this data, simply copy and paste their URL into the search bar.

If the website ranks for very few keywords, then updating their metadata and the content on their website so they’re targeting more relevant keywords on their site could be a great way to drive more organic traffic.
Tech Audits
Technical Audits allow clients to look into technical aspects of their site that may be hurting SEO performance and traffic. These audits can be done by Account Managers. They can be used for value ads or as a way to convince a client to get on a FH website.
These audits are done and exported in SEMRush and can give us insight into issues including:
Duplicate content
Mixed content
Duplicate Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, H1’s
Redirect errors / loops

MOZ: Link Explorer
Moz has a free tool called Link Explorer that shows you a website’s domain authority, linking domains, inbound links, and ranking keywords. All of these factors influence how well a website ranks in search engine results. To use the tool you must create a free account.
Once logged in, go to Free SEO Tools on the top right of the page. Select Link Explorer and enter the site you want to look into.

Domain Authority (DA)
DA is a ranking score ranging between 0-100 that tells you how authoritative a website is compared to other websites. It helps you predict how high a website will rank in search results, and is calculated based on the number of root domains and total links a website has, as well as other factors determined by MOZ.
Bigger companies like Wikipedia and Google tend to have higher scores, while smaller companies with fewer backlinks usually have lower scores.
Brand new websites always start with a DA score of 1, and won’t show up in search results until they have at least one backlink.
While there is no “best score”, the higher the DA the more likely a website is to rank well in search results.
This number is best used for comparative purposes, such as tracking a website’s authority over time, or comparing a website’s authority to its top competitors.
What To Do If Their DA is low?
When a website has a low DA, the client should focus on building their network of links, ideally backlinks. The more high quality backlinks a website has, the more authoritative they are considered to be. You can also submit a Backlink Audit to provide the client.
Linking Domains and Inbound Links
Linking Domains: The number of unique root domains linking to a target. Two links from the same website will only be counted as one linking root domain.
Inbound Link (backlinks): An incoming link from a page on another website back to your own site.
