Splitting payment on a booking
Last updated: August 23, 2021
When creating a booking, you can calculate and create separate payments for multiple people. This can come in handy, for example, if several guests want to split the payment for a booking and you need to determine how much each person should pay after taxes.
Depending on whether the customer prices on the booking are equal or not, the steps for splitting payment will vary. Click into a section below to learn more.
Splitting payment equally across customers
When all customers are priced the same, you can split payment by creating two or more partial payments on the booking. Watch a video or follow the steps below.
Note: In this example, we are booking 5 equally priced customers. 2 couples are paying together; one person is paying individually.
To split payment equally across customers:
Select the total number of customers on the book form

In the payment options section, select Partial payment and click the calculator icon
- Enter the number of people to split the payment between
- Enter the number of people to create the first payment for (For example, if two guests are paying together, enter 2 in this box)
Click the Set button to adjust the current payment amount

Select the payment method and complete the booking
From the completed booking, click the Add payment button

If there is only one payment left to make, choose Pay in full and complete the payment. Otherwise, continue adding partial payments by repeating steps 2-7 above until all parties have paid.
Splitting payment for differently priced customers
If the booking you’re creating includes customer types with different prices (for example, adults and children), you have two different options for creating split payments.
Create booking, add additional customers
With this method, you’ll create payments one at a time for each individual party on the booking. Watch a video or follow the steps below.
Note: In this example, we are booking 4 Adults and 1 Child. The first payment will be for 1 Adult and 1 Child, the second payment will be for 2 Adults, and the third payment will be for 1 Adult.
To create payments for each individual party on a booking:
Choose the number of customer types that the first party will pay for (For example: 1 Adult and 1 Child)

When you get to the payment options section, keep the Pay in full option selected
- Choose the payment method and complete the booking
Once the booking has been created, click the Add or remove customers button

Adjust the customer type dropdowns to add the next party (For example, if adding 2 additional adults, change the number of Adults from 1 to 3. Keep the number of Children at 1)
- Click Rebook now
- From the updated booking, click the Add payment button
- Keep the Pay in full option selected (the system will only add payment for the amount due) and complete the additional payment
- Repeat steps 4-8 for any additional parties that need to pay
Note: When adding or removing customers, you are essentially creating a new booking. The previous bookings (with incomplete customer types) will appear as cancelled and rebooked, and will not appear more than once in your reports.
Calculate payments in a new window
This process is similar to splitting payments equally across customers, but requires calculating individual parties’ payments in a new window.
To calculate payments in a new window:
- Open a new book form for the availability you want to book
- Duplicate the tab in your browser or copy and paste the URL into a new window
In the first window, select the total number of customers on the booking

In the payment options section, select Partial payment
- In your second window, choose the number of customer types that will be included on the first payment, and look at the booking total in the top right corner of the book form (in blue)
- Go back to the first window and enter the amount for the first payment
- Select the payment method and complete the booking
From the completed booking, click the Add payment button

If there is only one payment left to make, choose Pay in full and complete the payment. Otherwise, you can continue adding partial payments by repeating steps 4-8 above until all parties have paid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I split a partial payment?
The “split payment” calculator is designed to split the total amount on the booking. This means even if you’re only collecting a portion of the booking total, the calculator will still display numbers based on the total amount.
You can split payments on a booking however you’d like, but when collecting an amount that’s less than the booking total, you may need to calculate each individual’s payment outside of FareHarbor before entering the partial payment amounts in the system.
